Sompong Amornvivat, leader of the Pheu Thai Party and leader of the opposition parties in parliament, expressed his concerns on his Facebook page on Wednesday over the government’s bailout scheme.
Sompong said that in times of crisis like this, the ability of the government to allocate and manage resources is what determines the trust it receives from the people.
The example he raised was Singapore where they have clear cut policies in three aspects, their national budget, their public health response, and the business sector.
The opposition leader said that Thailand, however, has no clear policy on how to manage national resources to combat the outbreak or the restructuring of the fiscal budget in order to assist the people’s livelihoods, who are suffering financially due to social distancing measures.
Sompong said that he and the opposition were ready to support the government’s bailout if it had a clean plan and transparent usage of the funds. However, if mismanaged, the bailout could put the country in debt while not actually helping the people.
