Trouble continues for the 5,000 baht scheme as the “officers” sent to verify the eligibility of workers filing for compensation were not qualified nor were they civil servants, according to local newspapers.
More than 2 million people filed an appeal online when they were discarded from the cash handout scheme. The Ministry of Finance said on Thursday that they were now sending more than 10,000 officers from the ministry and the Ministry of Interior to check on the validity of these claims.
A law clerk whose income was halved by the lockdown told a local newspaper that the three officers that came to his residence have not worked for any government agencies before.
The so-called public officers asked for the law clerk’s identification card, took a photo of the card in front of his rented place and asked for his proof of employment before taking a photo of that as well.
When the law clerk asked why his colleagues were getting compensation but not him, the three officers said they do not know and they “cannot provide the answer.”
The law clerk then asked which ministry these officers worked for but they said they were not public officers and they only started working on Thursday.
Their assignment was to collect two photos and no other information.
They then provided the number of the Fiscal Policy Office to ask for more information but the number does not work.
Thai Enquirer has contacted the Ministry of Finance but its public relation officer said that he is “unsure.” Thai Enquirer then called the same number that was provided to the law clerk, but it does not exist.
