Parliament speaker Chuan Leekpai submitted a request on Wednesday to the constitutional court to decide whether Thammanat Prompao, the Deputy Minister for the Ministry of Agriculture, was fit for office.
Chuan submitted the request after a motion from the opposition who said that Thammanat was unfit for office for being imprisoned for trafficking drugs in Australia and having shares in a company that deals directly with the Port Authority of Thailand.
The opposition led by the Move Forward Party deem Thammanat to be unqualified as the Deputy Minister due to the following two issues:
Thammanat has defended his position by saying he was acquitted of the charges in Australia.
He was not. Australian media has confirmed he spent time behind bars there.
