Thailand’s economic team led by Deputy Prime Minister Somkid Jatusripitak and Finance Minister Uttama Savanayana resigned from their posts on Thursday paving the way for a cabinet reshuffle.
Also resigning were Minister of Energy Sontirat Sontijirawong, Minister of Education Suvit Maesincee and Kobsak Poontrakool.
The move was widely expected after Uttama was ousted from the ruling party after a leadership contest earlier this month.
It is understood by Thai Enquirer that the government have filled every position except for Somkid’s because of the complexity and difficulty of his job as overseer of the economy. Many have rejected the government’s advances, calling it a no-win position. (Read more here)
“We believe that this is a suitable time for us to resign from our position,” Uttama said at a press conference at the government house.
“In order for the country to move forward, to lessen the uncertainty, and to reduce the political pressure, especially on the Prime Minister at the moment. This could lead to delays in governance which is why we decided to leave now to provide clarity,” he added.
