There weren’t any foreign tourists in June, the third straight month in a row, as the government continues to prolong the entry ban for general tourists with no clear end in sight.
According to the Ministry of Tourism and Sports, tourist arrivals dropped by 66 per cent year-on-year to 6.7 million during the first six months of 2020.
Consequently, international tourism receipts have also declined by 65 per cent year-on-year, down to 332 billion baht (US$10.5 billion).
The ministry’s data showed that there was no tourists or receipts between April and June 2020.
In 2019, there were 3.2, 2.7, and 3.1 million visitors in April, May and June 2019 respectively. The combined income from the three months was 395 billion baht ($12.5 billion).
Thailand also welcomed 39.8 million tourists during that time which contributed to about 1.93 trillion baht worth of income for the country.
However, in 2020, the Bank of Thailand is expecting only 8 million visitors which is one of the major factors why they expect the country’s economy to go into a recession of at least 8 per cent.
