Police Lieutenant General Suwat Changyodsuk was appointed as the new national chief of police on Friday.
The appointment, made by a police selection committee that is chaired by Prime Minster Prayut Chan-ocha, came as no surprise since he was tipped to be as the favourite to replace Police General Chakthip Chaijinda who is retiring on September 30.
Pol Lt Gen Suwat or “Big Pud” will become the 12th national police chief.
He was born in 1961 from Chachoengsao province. He was in the same military cadet class with outgoing army chief General Apirat Kongsompong, as well as the same police cadet class with Pol Gen Chakthip.
He also received a bachelor degree in Computer Science from Chulalongkorn University. He has also received training from the FBI National Academy in Quantico, Virginia, USA.
Suwat will have a tough task once he assumes his new office with prolonged anti-government protests taking place. Police and government security forces have detained 28 protesters so far.
