The tropical storms and floods that began in August continues to cause devastation throughout the north and northeastern region of Thailand and have already affected thousands of lives and households.
The region was first hit by the Typhoon Sinlaku, followed by the tropical storm Higos coming in from China over the past weekend.
Flash floods are also expected to reach over 40 provinces in Thailand this week.
The provinces of Nan, Chiang Mai, Phayao, Phrae, Roi Et, Lampang, Loei, Uttaradit and Sukhothai have been hit the hardest.
Nan is currently experiencing its worst flood in 14 years which has now affected over 13 villages, four sub-districts, and more than 3,000 locals – most of whom have had to be evacuated, leaving some homeless due to the devastation.
Meanwhile, the flooding in Sukhothai is becoming more critical in many areas with waters entering from Phrae. Officials have opened five floodgates of 3.10 meters high to help drain the water out in the lower Yom River.
Officials in Lampang recovered a missing body on Monday morning. The 51-year-old Prajuab Tepbinta was the assistant to the village headman in Ban Pao village.
Media outlets reported over the past weekend that more than 2,000 rai of agricultural land in Roi Et were destroyed by the flood as waters continue to rise in other areas and households.
Narumon Pinyosinwat, the government spokesperson for the Ministry of Labour, announced on Monday that the ministry is keeping a close eye on the situation and has sent officials, along with necessities, to help and support the communities.
The waters in the Mekong River by Nakhon Phanom has now reached nine meters high with about 30-40 centimeters of water rising every day, prompting concerns over flooding in nearby villages.
Another tropical storm, Bavi, is soon expected to hit the region from the south of Japan at the end of August.
