Students formed a human chain in front of Chulalongkorn University’s Property Management Office in an attempt to block the school from relocating the Chao Mae Tubtim Shrine on Monday.
The shrine is due to be relocated today as the office plans to build a 1,800-unit condominium on the site.
The office said the shrine will be moved to the Chulalongkorn Park and any construction costs will be covered by the office.
The shrine was initially scheduled for demolishment in June but various site protests and an online campaign #saveศาลเจ้าแม่ทับทิม have rallied to stop its destruction which led to the current relocation plan instead.
However, there are still many students who do not want the 100-year old shrine to be moved at all because of its importance to the local community.
