New hashtag on depression trends on Thai Twitter

The hashtag #โรคซึมเศร้า (depression) trends on Thai Twitter on Monday as netizens come together to share their experiences with depression and bring awareness to the mental illness.

Under the hashtag, which has now amassed more than 25k tweets, users are sharing quotes, images, and stories to shed light on the disorder.

Accompanying the hashtag is a notification service เราพร้อมช่วยคุณ (we are ready to help you) launched by Twitter to help those battling with depressive symptoms during the COVID-19 pandemic.

The Twitter feature is partnered with Samaritans of Thailand, an organisation assisting those with mental health problems, and the Department of Mental Health.

A hotline to both organisations is also listed and linked in the feature:

Samaritans Thailand: 02-713-6793

Department of Mental Health: 1323

“You are not alone, whether you or your loved ones are feeling hopeless or facing hardships in life, we can help you,” the feature reads.

Some netizens also took to the hashtag to spread positive messages as well.

“You can overcome today as you have overcome the past. I believe in you and I’m sending you all my support. The fact that you are standing here right now proves how strong you are. If you need someone to listen to, I’m here ready for you. I’ll listen to you without making any judgements because I know there is no measurement for pain/ Hugs for you,” wrote user @VoirLesfilms.

This is a progressive step for Thailand in tackling mental health issues as the country still struggles to understand the full scope of the disorder.

Mental health is not yet recognized and treated as a real issue in Thailand and most parts of Asia due to the stigma surrounding it.

Over 7 million Thais reportedly suffer from mental health issues, according to findings released by the Department of Mental Health. The study also revealed that of the 7 million patients, 1.5 million suffer from depression.
